Why a plan for sync

The one-time purchase covers the app itself. The Sync plan covers the one part with an ongoing cost — running the always-on, end-to-end-encrypted relay that keeps your book identical across your devices. That’s the honest split: buy the app once, and pay for the cloud only if you want it.
The one-time purchase never expires. If you ever stop the Sync plan, the app and everything on your device keep working — you simply stop syncing to new devices.
