# Following topics

> Create a topic, keep it sharp, and tune out the noise.

A **topic** is the heart of Lexiline: a subject you've asked it to watch. Here's how to create
one and keep it accurate.

## Creating a topic

Tap **New topic** and describe what you want to follow in your own words — the more specific,
the better. "Will there be a Dune sequel" works better than "Dune," because it tells Lexiline
what *kind* of news you're waiting for, not just which words to match.

    Write the topic the way you'd explain it to a friend. Plain language is fine — Lexiline reads
    for meaning.

    That's it. The topic is now live and Lexiline begins watching the web for it. You don't need
    to do anything else.

    As matches show up, a thumbs-up or thumbs-down teaches Lexiline what you meant.

## Tuning out the noise

No watcher is perfect on the first day, because your topic lives in your head. Every match has a
simple **thumbs-up** (more like this) and **thumbs-down** (not what I meant). Mark a few and the
timeline tunes itself toward what you care about and away from what you don't — no rules or
operators to write. Over a week or two, a topic settles into something quietly accurate.

## How many topics you can follow
