# Painting roads

> How Fogline turns the roads you travel into painted map — passively, in the background, snapped to the real road network.

Fogline paints your map **passively**. You don't check in, start a trip, or log anything — the phone
records where you travel in the background and turns it into painted roads on its own. This is the
whole trick: the map fills itself in while you just live your life.

## How a road gets painted

<Steps>
  <Step title="The phone records where you go">
    In the background — app closed, screen off — Fogline notes where you travel, sampling as you move
    and staying quiet when you're still.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Your path is matched to real roads">
    Fogline snaps what it recorded onto the **actual road network** (from OpenStreetMap), so your
    coverage follows real streets instead of a rough GPS scribble.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Each stretch lights up">
    Roads are divided into short stretches of about **40 metres**. Travel one and it flips to painted
    — permanently. Little by little, your city lights up.
  </Step>
</Steps>

<Note>
  A stretch counts after **one pass, in any direction, by any means** — driving, walking, cycling, or
  riding along as a passenger. If you travelled it, it paints.
</Note>

## What counts (and what doesn't)

* **Any travel mode paints** — car, on foot, bike, bus, passenger. Fogline doesn't care how you got
  there, only that you did.
* **Either direction paints** — one pass is enough; you don't have to cover a road both ways.
* **Noise is filtered out** — GPS jitter and standing still don't paint anything, so your map
  reflects where you actually travelled.

## Where the road network comes from

The roads Fogline paints onto come from **OpenStreetMap**, bundled into the region pack you download
so matching works fully offline. Each pack shows a **"data as of"** date, and regenerated packs pick
up new and changed roads over time (see [Offline maps](/fogline/offline-maps)).
