# Account & privacy

> One free account across your devices, what leaves your phone (and what never does), and the permissions Fogline needs.

## One free account

Fogline uses a single **free burakov account** (email, Google, or Apple) that works across all your
apps and devices. **Signing in is required** — it's what lets your painted map back up and follow you
from one phone to the next. There are **no subscriptions** and nothing to buy.

## Private by design

Fogline is built so the **sensitive part never leaves your phone**:

* **Your raw location trail** — the record of where and when you actually travelled — stays **on your
  device** and is used only to paint roads. It is **never uploaded**.
* **Only your painted roads** — the plain list of which road stretches are lit up, plus your coverage
  totals — sync to your account, so your map can back up and reach your other devices.
* **The basemap and road network** live **offline on your device** as downloaded packs.

The server knows which roads you've coloured in, but not the routes, times, or trips that painted
them.

## Permissions it asks for

    the screen is off. That passive tracking is the whole point — without it, there's nothing to
    paint.

    that's how the system lets an app keep painting with the screen off, so you can always tell it's

  Fogline is a **personal project, not a business** — your data isn't sold or used for ads. Because a
  movement map is personal, it's built to keep your raw trail on your device and share only the roads
  you've painted.
