# Administration

> Run your organization from the Bastion admin panel — members, roles, audit log, retention and modules.

Every Bastion node comes with a separate **admin panel** for the organization's owner and admins. It runs alongside the node and signs in with the same passwordless email flow.

## Members and roles

Invite people by email and manage who can do what:

* **Owner** — full control of the organization.
* **Admin** — manage members, chats and settings.
* **Member** — use chat and calls.

Adding or removing members, and changing roles, all happen here. Certain actions (like adding members to a chat) are limited to owners and admins.

## Audit log

Administrative and security-relevant events are recorded in an **audit log** you can review — who was invited, role changes, and similar actions — so there's an accountable record of what happened in the organization.

## Retention

Set a **retention policy** so old messages are automatically deleted after a chosen period. A background job sweeps expired content on a schedule, keeping the organization to the data it actually needs.

## Privacy controls

Turn on **metadata-minimal mode** to minimize the metadata the node emits: it switches off typing indicators and delivery/read receipts, and forces notifications to their most generic form. It's enforced on the server for everyone in the organization — see [Accounts & privacy](/bastion/accounts-and-privacy).

## Channels

A **channel** is a persistent room. By default any member can post; an owner or admin can switch a channel to **admins-only posting** (announcements) — members can still reply in comment threads. The toggle lives on the channel's info page.

## Modules

Bastion is modular. The base module is **chat + calls**; the admin settings are where an organization's enabled capabilities are managed as more modules become available.

<Note>
  The admin panel is **content-blind** where it counts: because messages and calls are end-to-end encrypted, administration is about people, roles and policy — not reading conversations.
</Note>

## Platform vs. organization admin

* **Organization admin** (this panel) — you, running your own node.
* **Platform admin** — a separate, content-blind view used to manage organizations and licensing at the platform level. It can see that an organization exists and its plan, never its messages.
